Pack

in the Big Sur State Park. And don't forget to bring a towel... we are
camping near Sykes Hot Springs.
We're going backpacking back in the Big Sur State Park and camping near Sykes Hot Springs. Enjoy the best the Bay has to offer with Redwoods, seaside views and your own private hot springs!
What to expect: This is a trip that's on the to-do list
of most bay area trekkers. The majority of the 20-mile in and out trail
is single track with rolling hills, redwood groves, and a river
crossing to keep it interesting.
Schedule:
- Friday: We'll meet Friday evening around 4:00pm at the parking lot and hike in 1/2 way. We will camp at the 5mi mark at the first (significant) stream crossing. If you are arriving later and hiking in on your own- be prepared to hike in the dark...but look for the Urban Diversion mascot (monkey) for our tents.
UPDATE: We will also have a 8p group leaving from the parking lot for those that cant leave Bay Area until after work Friday. This hike will be in the dark, but our host is an expert and promises to not get you lost :) We will meet up with the 4p group on Fri night and continue from there.
- Saturday: Early Saturday morning we'll hike the final 5 miles to
camp near the Sykes Hot Springs and enjoy a soak and dinner under the stars (and some late-night hot tub soaking shenanigains!)
- Sunday: we'll rise at our leisure, take a blissful morning soak, have a hearty breakfast and begin the moderate trek back out and be back to our cars at around 4:00pm.

About the Hike: Sykes Hot Springs is a popular backpacker destination located in the
Ventana Wilderness near Big Sur. The trek is ten mile each way. The
hike starts at 400 ft elevation and hits a maximum of 1500 ft, but over
the course of the trip you climb approximately 3000 ft and descended
2000 ft. The destination campsite has hot springs and a stream. There
are a number of other campsites along the way. The Pine Ridge Trail
mostly weaves through a cover of redwoods, pine and oak. The trail is
typically well maintained and extremely easy to follow. |
Note from the host:
This trip is geared for those who have backpacked before- however,
if you are relatively fit, and can carry a pack, you can enjoy this
trip. This trip can be an excellent beginners trip if you are willing
to learn, get sweaty and have fun!
We will be hiking at an average pace of 1.5 to 2
miles an hour. This may be exhausting to those who aren't used to
carrying a pack. We require that you be in good physical health, and
have previously hiked at least a 10-mile day hike without discomfort.
If you have any questions about this trip, your ability to do this trip- please give your host a shout. We did this last year with 4 newbies to backpacking and they did just fine!!! Don't let your fear discourage you from joining!!!
