BANGKOK: Nouvo City Hotel

FLIGHTS

ARRIVAL FLIGHT:

You will be flying into Phuket (HKT) and must ARRIVE NO LATER than Sat Nov 25 at 10pm. We recommend arriving out on Thursday or Friday so you can spend Saturday exploring Phuket and getting over any jet lag. If you plan to arrive earlier than Saturday and need help finding accommodations/transportation, reach out to your host for tips and help planning.

NOTE: Try doing your own flight searches using the multi-city selection to book a "round trip" flight with different arrival and departure airlines. You may be able to save a bit using this method, or at least save some time in booking multiple times. CHECK OUT THIS OPTION FOR ~$1,350

RECOMMENDED FLIGHTS:

  • Depart SFO Thur 11/23 @12:20pm (EVA Air BR7)  2hr 25min layover in Taipei (TPE)
    • fly to Bangkok (BKK) (EVA Air BR205) ⇒ 8 hr 25min (long) layover in Bangkok ⇒
      • fly to Phuket (Bangkok Airways PG271) ⇒
        • Arrive Phuket International Airport (HKT) Sat 11/25 @ 9:35am
  • Note: Be sure to confirm baggage allowances, seat preferences (if available), and change/cancelation policies before booking!
  • Be aware of the long layover from Bangkok (BKK) to Phuket (HKT) - perhaps you want to leave the airport and find somewhere to sleep overnight
  • We recommend sleeping on the plane and during the overnight layover as much as possible. Taipei is only 1 hr ahead of Thailand's time zone. Getting regulated on the new time zone schedule ASAP will help minimize the effects of jet lag!

DEPARTURE FLIGHT:

You will be flying home from Bangkok (BKK or DMK) and may leave any time on Sun Dec 2. We recommend arriving to the airport 3 hours before your flight departure for enough time to get through customs and account for any traffic delays.

  • Don't worry - you'll save a day with time zone transfers on the flight back (real life time travel)!

RECOMMENDED FLIGHTS:

  • Depart Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok (BKK) Sat 12/9 @2:20pm (Vietnam Airlines VN604)
    • 1hr 50min layover in Ho Chi Minh City (SGN)
      • Arrive SFO Sat 12/9 @ 5:00pm (Vietnam Airlines VN98)
  • Note: Be sure to confirm baggage allowances, seat preferences (if available), and change/cancelation policies before booking!
  • Transportation to airport not included - ask your host for help reserving a ride, or coordinate ride sharing with other members heading home.

OTHER TRANSPORTATION YOU MUST BOOK:

Day 7 - Krabi to Bangkok: We will be traveling from Krabi Airport to Bangkok together for our last night. This will help make the trip home the next day smoother.

RECOMMENDED FLIGHTS:

  • Depart Krabi (KBV) Thur 12/1 @4:35pm (Thai Vietjet Air VZ343) ⇒
    • Arrive Bangkok (BKK) @6:00pm
  • We highly recommend booking this exact flight below so we can all travel together - let your host know if you need to book a different flight for any reason so we can coordinate group transfer into the city for the night.

  • Need s passport? Go to this link and start your application now. This may take up to 3 months, so start this process ASAP!
    • If you are in a pinch to get your passport, you can bring your ticket that leaves within a few days to the passport agency in SF or LA and pay a ton of money for a same day passport.... but don't plan on it!

VISAS

HEALTH + VACCINATIONS

COVID-19: No vaccinations or proof of negative test currently required for entry/exit. Learn more on the the official COVID-19 Thailand-Specific Information page.

Additional Vaccinations: Standard vaccination recommendations should be fine. Please check the CDC's official requirements and recommendations and talk to your doctor.

Drinking Water:  Tap water in Thailand is generally NOT safe to drink - bring a reusable water bottle to fill from filtered water available at lodging accommodations (look for those big blue water jug dispensers). When eating at restaurants, only accept water in unopened water bottles, and be aware that ice cubes may be made from tap water.

View the official US Department of State's travel website for a helpful all-inclusive guide on traveling to Indonesia.

HELPFUL INFO

STAYING CONNECTED

Group Communication: For this trip, we will plan to stay in contact before and during our travels via WhatsApp. This allows for free texting over WiFi and is the primary method of communication for business and travelers in Southeast Asia. Your host will start a group chat shortly before the trip and provide more info to join.

WiFi: Unless you really don't feel comfortable getting around or not being able to send texts while wandering, you can get by with using just WiFi at your accommodations or local cafes/restaurants. Note that connection strength in rural places can often be weak and/or non-existent, even if they "have WiFi", and you must feel comfortable navigating the old fashioned way... aka a map and your brain.

SIM Cards: Available to purchase pre-paid data amounts at the airport or most convenience stores on site. Just make sure you have an unlocked phone and/or check to make sure your phone provider allows third party SIM card plans.

e-SIM Cards: Same as above, only you purchase online and can set it up in advance.

International Data Plans: Most major phone providers will offer temporary international data plans. Either pay a flat rate per day for unlimited roaming, or a set amount of data. Just set it up with them in advance for each day you plan to use data roaming.

Check out more details with this great comprehensive blog post on using your phone internationally!

WEATHER OVERVIEW

Thailand is a tropical country and experiences only two seasons: wet and day. The dry season is generally between late Nov to Feb, and the wet season (meaning hot and sticky) lasts the rest of the year. Expect average temperatures of 21°C (70°F) at night and over 30°C (86°F) during the day.

EXCHANGE RATE

The currency exchange rate changes regularly, but is generally around 34-40 TBH per 1 USD
