About the Geminids Meteor Shower:
The Geminids Meteor Shower is known for putting on one of the brightest and most reliable meteor shows of the year, lighting up the night sky every December. Unlike most meteor showers, which originate from comets, the Geminids are the result of debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This creates slower-moving, vivid meteors that often streak across the sky in vibrant colors, making them a favorite for stargazers.
At its peak, the Geminids can produce up to 120-150 meteors per hour! We’ve chosen to host our meteor shower camping trip the weekend before to the actual peak because while the meteors will still be plentiful, the crescent moon phase offers darker skies, perfect for stargazing without the interference of a bright moon. It’s the ideal balance for catching a high number of meteors while enjoying the best possible conditions for visibility.
ITINERARY
DAY 1 | Friday
Arrive at our Campground
- Check in with your host at the campsite and set up your personal tent.

- When the sun sets, your host will start preparing dinner.
- The end of the day means enjoying a delicious group meal together, a crackling fire & s'mores.

DAY 2 | Saturday
Explore the Muir Woods!
- After our first night of R&R, our host will make a nourishing breakfast and coffee to get you fueled up.
- Today we will be doing a beautiful hike in the Muir woods, highlighting the depth of the forest and the giant redwood trees. This trail will leave right from our campground, eliminating the need for driving/parking at the muir woods main parking lot, saving us all a big headache. We will hike through a scenic redwood forest, a gorgeous fern canyon, and the Mount Tam watershed surrounded my lush meadows and rolling hills.
- After our hike, the late afternoon is a great time to hangup a hammock, take a nap, read a book, or walk to the viewpoint for an epic sunset over the ocean.
- As night approaches, your host will prepare a delicious camp dinner and refreshments. We will start the campfire and roast marshmallows as the sun sets.
- Another epic night of meteors and epic star gazing awaits. The bluff near by is just a short walk away, and offers completely open night sky viewing over the water.
