Beginner Backpacking &
Meteor Shower on California’s Coast!
*This is a co-op event*

This secluded stretch of the California Coast just north of SF is one of the most beautiful places in our entire state, both rugged and tranquil at the same time.

Our route will bring us high upon the bluffs with endless ocean views, and down to the soft-sand beaches with the waves breaking on the shore. Not to mention, the opportunity to walk to the iconic Alamere Falls from our campsite at low tide!!

This backpacking trip is perfect for beginners! It's also great for experienced backpackers who are looking to train for the summer season. Come explore this bucket-list location with the UD crew!

Trip Details:

This short backpacking trip is great for all levels, and perfect for beginners! Our daily mileage and elevation gain is minimal, yet just enough to give us a taste of true backpacking! The total mileage for the weekend will be around 11-15 miles round trip, split up into three days of hiking, making it perfect for anyone looking to get in "trail training" before summer starts. Expect to see beautiful secluded beaches, redwood forests, grassy plains, seaside cliffs, hidden lakes, tide pools and more. If we're lucky we might even see some Tule Elk!

Plus the Lyrid meteor shower! The peak is around April 22, and meteors will still be visible this weekend, especially in the pre-dawn hours. Keep an eye out for bright streaks across the sky!

Itinerary:

Friday Afternoon:

Our adventure begins here! We have exactly 5.5 miles to hike on the first day. Sunset is at 7:51pm, so we want to get going NO LATER than 3pm. This should give us time to take plenty of stops along the way, enjoy the amazing views, and still make it to camp on time. When we arrive at camp, we will set up camp, make a delicious meal, and rest our legs from an exciting first day in the wilderness!

Saturday:

We will start the day right with a delicious homemade breakfast prepared by your host!

Today is all about visiting the famous Alamere Falls, a gorgeous waterfall that falls directly on the beach. This is an moderate hike from out campsite, and very much worth the extra effort.

When we arrive back to camp, our host will make a fabulous dinner and we will relax for the night with great conversation and camp convos!

Sunday:

After a leisurely rise in the morning, our host will prepare a hot breakfast. We will pack up camp, and make the 5.5 mile hike back to the cars and make the relatively short drive back to the Bay Area. This day can be taken at a mellow pace - it will be moderate and we'll be able to take our time on our sore legs. This is the perfect last day for a training backpacking trip, not too strenuous, but gets the blood pumping just enough. We'll close out the hike with nonstop beautiful views of the ocean!

Includes:

  • Experienced host for the weekend
  • 2 Nights Backpacking Permits at campsites with ocean views!
  • Trail Snacks
  • Lunches for Saturday and Sunday (bring a sack lunch for Friday)
  • Delicious dinners on Friday and Saturday
  • Breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday
  • Club Group Gear (tarps, stoves, first aid kit)
  • Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions ASAP! Use the comments box when you register for this event.

Attire: Dress in warm layers and wear hiking boots. If you'd like to do a polar plunge, don't forget your SWIMSUIT! We will send out a packing list to registration list before trip.

Why You Should Come:

The California seashore is one of the most beautiful, dynamic stretches of coastline anywhere on the West Coast of the United States. Permits are very limited and hard to get, meaning fewer people on the trails! This backpacking trip captures so much of what this area of California has to offer - long, stunning beaches, dense forests, starry skies, and more. Enjoy a beginner backpacking trip without the crazy, stressful elevation gain that most backpacking trips include. Come along, put your toes in the sand, and join your UD friends for an awesome trip just a short hour and a half out of the city.

SEE YOU THERE :)
