Carnaval SF:

A Festival of Color & Culture!

Every year, San Francisco comes alive with the vibrant energy of Carnaval San Francisco, the largest multicultural celebration on the West Coast. Now in its fourth decade, this iconic festival brings together diverse cultures in a shared spirit of creativity, expression, and joy.

During the festival in the heart of the Mission District, attendees can immerse themselves in the rich traditions of Latin American and Caribbean cultures through live music and dance performances, dazzling costumes, arts and crafts exhibitors, delicious food and drink, and community showcases.

What is Carnaval?

First held at Precita Park in 1979, Carnaval was organized by artists and organizers who wanted to pay homage to the historic Carnaval celebrations that take place all over Latin America and the Caribbean. Carnaval San Francisco is a vibrant celebration of culture, music, and dance that brings the Mission District to life. As the largest multicultural festival on the West Coast, it showcases the rich traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean through live performances, colorful costumes, delicious food, and an incredible sense of community.

Fun fact: Carnaval San Francisco was inspired by the world-famous celebrations in Brazil and the Caribbean, and it has been bringing joy to the city since 1979! Whether you're here for the music, the performances, or just the electric atmosphere, this festival is an unforgettable experience that captures the heart and soul of San Francisco.

What To Expect:

  • Carnaval festivities & Latin American culture to indulge in
  • Your cheeky UD host ready to guide you to the best spots!
  • Traditional Mexican & Caribbean music, drunken folk and a great atmosphere to join! (I may be biased, but Caribbeans know how to celebrate)
  • An UNFORGETTABLE day with your UD friends!

What To Bring:

  • $$ for food & drinks - there may be some cover at bars/venues so bring cash!
  • Good vibes and an open mind
  • Your best party vibes

Attire: It's time to go all out for Carnaval!  Drown yourself in vibrant colors—the more, the better! If you've got a colorful flag or something extra bold, drape it over your shoulders and paint your face with the spirit of the celebration!  And don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, because we’ll be dancing, exploring, and walking all day long!
